Team Sleep “Ever Since WWI”
The family of projects surrounding the Deftones seems to have no
end. Almost every time I hear Chino’s voice on something new, I’m
reminded of my favorite, overlooked early 2000's band that he
participated in - Team Sleep. Comprised of Chino (Deftones), Zack
Hill (Death Grips, Hella), Rob Crowe (Pinback), and DJ Crook - this
record combines all the elements from those blockbuster projects
into one very special listen. I always revisit Team Sleep when I am in a
transitional place in my life - the songs are contemplative and
powerful.

Faetooth “It Washes Over”
On their debut Flenser release, Faetooth solidifies their ethereal and
crushing sound in a way that positions them for some real success.
I listen to a lot of heavier doom recordings and it’s rare to hear a
perfectly tuned yet powerful wall of sound like producer Calleiro has
captured on Labyrinthine.

Aya “Peach”
Aya creates a highly atmospheric track filled with harmonic textures
accompanied by a driving beat that guides the listener through the
twists and turns of enigmatic lyrics and dystopian melodies. “Peach”
is a powerful song that drips with emotion; there’s anger, anxiety,
fear, sorrow, and even some vague optimism here. Each listen offers
up another perspective and insight. Are we having a breakdown at 4
am at a rave or is this a moment of clarity at dusk in our woodside
cottage?

Deyaz “Typhoon” b/w “Cry a Symphony”
When something comes across my desk (tiktok feed) as infectious
and grabbing as Deyaz’s last two singles, I have no choice but to put
them both up as required listening. Relatively undiscovered, though
on Columbia Records, Deyaz fuses clearly perfected pop production
with honest themes of humiliation, heartbreak, and boundaries using
his own uniquely beautiful voice.
